Interview with Adam Foreman: Game artist and illustrator.

Games, Apps, Galore got the chance to sit down with Adam Foreman and talk about games and his latest projects. Adam has worked on tons of different projects a notable one being, Beyond Gravity a generated platformer where you jump in-between planets, collecting pickups which was released on Steam, IOS and Android.

1) Can you give me a little insight into how long you've been an artist and what field(s) you primarily work in?

Professionally as a full time freelancer, about 4 years. Back in 2001 I studied art and graphic design in collage which lead onto an animation course at University in 2005, I never really stopped drawing from there. Now I work in a whole range of mediums such as illustration, graphic design, video games, board games, animation, toy design and more. Recent examples of my work would be working with Overworld Games on the board game 'Exposed' and Firaxis Games designing a limited Viper vinyl model from the video game XCOM 2.

2) Tell  me a bit about how you come up with your  ideas?

For commission work I exchange ideas for the project via email or Skype with the client, from there I sketch a dozen ideas we discussed and together combine the best bits of each. For personal work I create illustrations for the portfolio based on what client work I would like to attract.

3) Once you have a good  idea, how do you come up with the character(s) and bring them to life? (What's your process and the mediums that you use?)

Over time working as an illustrator I've developed a style that allows me to visualise a character, object or scene before I even begin drawing. I start by sketching them out in greyscale in a digital sketchbook. For this I use Clip Studio Paint as the pen tools feel so natural. Once the sketch gets the thumbs up from a client I create the final vector art in Adobe Illustrator and work on the colour schemes.

For A4matic the process is slightly different as I work with model maker Nicola, collaborating on 3D designs or animation. We both draw sketches of initial ideas that we then combine into the best of both and I refine it, drawing up the final design in my style.

4) Can you tell me if you work with a team or is it a one man show?

Both, I work independently as my artist alias A4man and also through my business partnership A4maic with model maker/animator Nicola Welbourne. We also enlist musician David Burrows with any project that may require music as he brings so much to a project by creating what we need but with his own unique style thrown it.

5) Lastly, what is your favourite video game of all time and what are you playing now and what do you primarily play on?

I was a PC gamer but now this has become a tool for my work, to relax and escape I play the Playstation 4 for gaming. Overwatch on the PS4 is sneaking into the number 1 spot for favourite games as it's brilliant fun to play online with friends. Favourite game of all time is a difficult question as I have a dozen favourites. Street Fighter 2 on the Super Nintendo was one of the games I owned as a kid and I still have all the special moves stored in my muscle memory. The one I find myself coming back to every few years though is Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation 1. It still holds up!

Adams newest creation "Rescue Red" is "a short clay animation inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, told through the retro style of a video game." You can view this video below.
