Interview with Darryl Barnes of DAB Studio 7.

Darryl Barnes of DAB Studio 7 took time out of his busy schedule to talk to Games, apps, galore about his new game, Penguin Tales and his inspiration for making games.
Penguin Tales is an EPIC, 2D endless swimmer where you will play as a young penguin named Gills who is born with an odd-red pigment. Because of Gills different color, he is greatly bullied by his peers and deemed an outcast by the Blue and Fairy Colony. Determined to be accepted, he sets out on an epic journey to discover the "Hidden Chest.” Check out Darryl’s full story below.

1) Tell me about a little about DAB Studio 7 and how you got started?

DAB Studio 7 started back in 2012 when I first began to dabble in digital art and animation (for Youtube, of course).
"DAB" stands for my initials, Darryl Antonio Barnes, and I added my lucky number 7 since someone already had the domain name for dabstudio.com.

2) What made you want to start creating games and how long have you been creating games?

I've always had an interest in creating video games from childhood, but I never made the leap into game development until I began to see indie devs have great success in the video game scene and compete with the larger video game companies. Games like Spelunky, Hotline Miami, Hyper Light Drifter, and Flappy Bird inspired me to give it a try. I begin creating Penguin Tales in 2014.

3) What software do you use to make your games? (Unity, game maker etc.)

I use Game Maker Studio when creating Penguin Tales. Since my strengths lean more towards art and design, I needed a software that could do most of the heavy lifting when it came to programming.

4) Your new game "Penguin Tales" is due to release next month, tell me about the game and your process for creating it.

Penguin Tales is an EPIC 2D action, endless "swimming" platformer that follows a story of a little red penguin name Gills who must dodge dangerous predators at sea while he search for a hidden treasure chest. My process is simple, research what people love to play and incorporate that research into addictive, challenging gameplay.

5) Penguin Tales is also in the testing phase, how has that process been for you?

Amazing! I don't believe there's anything better for a game developer than watching others enjoy your game as much as you enjoyed making it. When people cannot stop playing Penguin Tales because they frustratingly enjoy the challenge of the gameplay, I get a rush of unexplainable joy!

6) Why did you choose to make games on the mobile platform? Do you see DAB making games for consoles in the future?

I chose the mobile platform first because I wanted to start simple, with baby steps. Like a baby, I wanted to crawl, walk, run. I didn't want to come out the womb running and fall on my face because I skipped the foundational steps of building up to running. I do plan to develop for console and PC in the near future, but I wanted to get my feet wet first.

7) What games are you playing currently and what system do you primarily play on?

I'm currently playing all the Battlefields (BF4, BFH, BF1), Ghost Recon Wildlands. I play Xbox One of course!

8) Thanks for your time, do you have any last words or advice for anyone that wants to get into making games?

First, thank you for the opportunity and the platform to speak. I would just say to those that's chasing their dreams, DON'T HESITATE! What I mean by "DON'T HESITATE" is simple, yet difficult. When you have a dream, an idea, a goal, take IMMEDIATE action.... that split second you take to think about it, "POOF", you just hesitated and 99% of the time, when you hesitate, you talk yourself into pushing your dream off until tomorrow. Tomorrow turns into next week, and next week quickly becomes next year. DON'T HESITATE, ACT!

Penguin Tales will be released April 28, 2017 on PC/Steam, IOS and Android.
